Student gives NightQuarter VIP treatment

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast interior design student, Melissa Bergen, is thrilled to see her designs come to life this week at the popular NightQuarter markets in Helensvale.

Melissa spent over 30 hours creating a stylish VIP function space using 10 adjoining shipping containers as part of her assessment and a competition.

The competition was open to TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Diploma of interior design students who were ask to transform the containers into a vibrant VIP space.

Keeping in line with the brief and budget, students were responsible for colour schemes, flooring, furnishings, layout, décor and lighting across two bars, two private dining rooms and corporate style booths.

Melissa, 28, said she drew her initial inspiration from her recent travel adventures abroad and added her own flare with bright colours and patterned fabrics.

"I've been traveling a bit lately and really loved all the street art I saw in London," said Melissa.

"Pops of colour can be seen throughout the entire space with contemporary artwork by a local street artist."

The entrance is lined with vines and fairy-lights and inside you'll find daybeds made from recycled palettes, wine barrel bar tables and walls cladded with recycled timber.

The two exclusive dining rooms feature wicker pendant lighting presenting the beachy look.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast General Manager, Jenny Dodd, said it was an excellent project for the students to obtain a first-hand understanding of the industry.

"Melissa was not only able to put her skills and knowledge into practice, but also see the end result," said Dodd.

"TAFE Queensland Gold Coast has invested into the training delivery of our programs to include greater involvement with local industry and more hands-on activity, giving students real project experience to better prepare them for employment."

NightQuarter owner, Michelle Christoe, said it was a pleasure working with the interior design students.

"We have been extremely proud of the high level of interior design skills presented by the students; it is a credit to TAFE Gold Coast's interior design course."
