It was almost 10 years ago when TAFE Queensland and the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) joined forces, and it is a partnership that's made a huge difference.
The saying goes that old ways won't open new doors - as a co-educational trade school, AITC provides students with the opportunity to complete their senior secondary education while developing their trades and technical skills. It's different, and that's why it works.
The partnership sees TAFE Queensland provide vocational education and training to AITC students in years 10, 11 and 12 students in a range of specialised training programs including trade tasters, pre-apprenticeships, school-based apprenticeships and more.
The success of the partnership is clearly evidenced by a surge in school-based apprenticeships with 46 currently enrolled students and the development of further more specialised training programs provided to both staff and students of AITC. In addition, TAFE Queensland has worked with the AITC to develop training days that focus on young women entering a trade. This initiative has seen hundreds of girls try a range of industries including tiling, dental assisting, animal husbandry, hospitality (barista), floristry, construction, automotive, engineering and horticulture.
This year, TAFE Queensland has provided training to 79 Year 11 students, and 39 Year 10 students who are currently enrolled in preparation for Certificate qualifications following completion of the workshop/taster programs.
"We value the partnership as it's a collaboration that exposes young people to skills that assist in pathways to employment, while providing flexible training options to employers and students" says Rob Jones TAFE Queensland Gold Coast, Director of Faculty Trade Industry Skills.
Through the partnership, staff of AITC can also access a range of professional development opportunities across a range of qualifications including CHC41215 Certificate IV in Career Development & TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment.
First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) are also available to staff and students of AITC.
This mutually beneficial partnership will result in continued success skilling young people for local employers and as future local business owners.
