School-based TAFE students get a head start

WHILE most year 12 students are anticipating the arrival of their OP scores and university acceptance letters, Gold Coast students Sarah Connors and Beth Dickson are already on their way to a rewarding health career.

The pair enrolled into TAFE Queensland Gold Coast's Diploma of Nursing program for school students at the beginning of their year 11 studies giving them the added advantage of fast tracking into their preferred careers.

Now, they are both set to graduate from high school with a senior certificate and have successfully completed 12 out of 25 units within the Diploma of Nursing from TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.

Ms Connors, 17, from Rivermount College said she enrolled into the program to set her on the right path to a successful medical career.

"I wanted to achieve a medical career but I didn't do enough of the right subjects at school; so when I heard about the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Diploma of Nursing program for high school students, I saw it as my opportunity to get a foot in the door."

The high school senior plans to continue her education at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast by completing the remaining units of the Diploma of Nursing in 2017.

"I am going to continue my studies here at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast to become an Enrolled Nurse and hopefully gain employment in an aged care facility while studying."

For Tamborine Mountain State High School senior, Beth Dickson, the program has cemented her career choice in the health industry.

"This program has confirmed my decision to pursue a career in the health industry as I want to help and care for people while making a difference."

The 17-year-old said the program taught her everything from the anatomy and physiology of the body to vital observations as well as CPR and first aid.

The 20 month program is delivered via clinical workshops in the purpose built health simulation labs at the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Southport Campus and focus on the practical application of theory.

The students are also given the opportunity to participate in 80 hours of industry experience to consolidate and apply their skills and knowledge.
