Documentary Production

Unit code: 7883

Description: This unit provides a historical and conceptual overview of creative non-fiction production, from John Grierson\'s documentaries in the 1920s, through to the contemporary filmmakers who have contributed to the wide diversity of current styles and forms. Drawing on this overview, and on production and research skills from other Media Arts units, students will produce their own short form documentaries, from idea generation, research, and scripting, through to filming, editing and post-production. As part of this process, students will explore a variety of creative fact-based forms and styles including process documentary, performative documentary, cinema-verite, political and propaganda documentary, dramatised and reflexive documentary. This unit integrates theory and practice to provide a critical understanding of the diversity of the documentary form.
