Craft a career in cabinet making

If you’re the kind of person who gets real satisfaction crafting something of value with your own two hands, a career as a cabinet maker will tick all the boxes for you. As a Cabinet Maker you will make and assemble furniture from solid timber, flat-panel or timber-based products. With our Certificate III you can specialise in particular areas such as reproduction of antique furniture, kitchen fittings, bedroom suites, office furniture, dining suites, shop fittings and occasional furniture.

Please note there are two streams within this qualification, a Furniture stream and a Kitchen/Bathroom stream. Note – Qualification descriptors for this qualification will depend on the pathway selection.  Those completing Stream A will achieve a Certificate III in Cabinet Making (Furniture) and those completing Stream B will achieve a Certificate III in Cabinet Making (Kitchens and Bathrooms).

  • Select timbers for furniture production
  • Prepare cutting lists from plans and job specifications

Stream B – Kitchen and Bathroom additional topics:

  • Check and measure fit of cabinets
  • Prepare cutting lists from plans and job specifications
  • Set up, operate and maintain drilling machines
  • Set up edge banding machines
  • Identify processes in kitchen and bathroom projects
  • Determine requirements for installation of cabinets
  • Conduct onsite adjustments to cabinets and components
  • Fabricate cabinets for the built-in environment
  • Install fitted cabinets and components

Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol into this program as an apprentice students need to have completed a Training Contract with an employer and be signed up into an apprenticeship.

  • If under 16 years of age you will need to fill out an Application for Dispensation form prior to enrolment.
  • Admission may be on the basis of maturity and other relevant work experience.
  • This course has additional entry requirements if you wish to take advantage of the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Skills Assessment and Gap Training (SAGT) funding option.  You must be currently working or have previous experience in the Construction Industry (provide evidence) as well as meet all other subsidy eligibility.  Please request a CSQ Declaration form from Customer Service to apply for this funding.

Apprentices may be eligible for partial recognition of prior learning if they can demonstrate experience in the trade. Please discuss this with the TAFE representative who completes your apprenticeship induction site visit.

Non-apprentices may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in full.

• Prior to enrolment we are able to assess your skills via Credit Transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
• If you have completed an accredited program through another training provider you may be eligible to receive a Credit Transfer.
• If you have relevant industry experience you may be eligible to receive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Resources required

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland Gold Coast's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.

This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Timetable

Delivery is held over 4 years at Ashmore using a combination of workplace training and TAFE attendance.

Many TAFE Queensland Gold Coast apprenticeships now offer the option of more on-the-job training and therefore less time spent attending TAFE. Wherever this is the case a TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Trainer is assigned to attend your workplace to deliver training and assess your skills and knowledge.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast has structured training for various course competencies that are not practised regularly in the workplace so many employers may still choose to send their apprentice to TAFE to learn those skills, however, this is done by negotiation between the employer and the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Trainer.

The approved hours for an individual apprentice will vary according to the units of competency specified in their individual training plan.

Disclaimer

Not all electives available at all campuses

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. For more information on the number of units funded for this course visit Queensland Training Information Services.

Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee, at the time of induction.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. The student and employer contribution fee will be outlined in the training place and agreed to, prior to the commencement of training.

Additional Costs

There are no additional costs to study this course.

Outcome

Upon completion of the apprenticeship participants will be trade qualified as a Cabinet Maker.  Further training pathways from this qualification include Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology and relevant supervisory, management or competitive manufacturing qualifications.
