Kick start your career as an Apprentice Electrician

Can’t wait to start your career as an electrician? Our Certificate II in Electrotechnology is the perfect study option for you. Designed to get you started on your career path, successful completion of the course will give you credits towards a First Year Apprenticeship in the electrical trade. You’ll learn fundamental workplace safety as well as basic skills and knowledge to prepare you for an apprenticeship in an electrotechnology field.

Students learn and acquire the following skills:

  • to understand mandatory requirements of occupational health and safety and how they apply to the electrotechnology industry
  • in basic fitting and fabrication techniques as they apply in the various utilities industry work functions
  • for fixing, securing and mounting techniques as apply in the various electrotechnology work functions
  • with the use of drawings, diagrams, cable schedules, standards, codes and specifications as they apply to the various electrotechnology work functions
  • in the use of routine tools, equipment and personnel protective equipment required to do work in the energy sector environment
  • undertake scheduled routine work activities in the energy sector in an agreed time, to a quality standard and with a minimum of waste
  • in sound understanding of identified components, accessories or materials for the electrotechnology industry
  • in the use of apparatus manufacturer's instruction material, basic instruction methods and evaluation and completing documentation for the electrotechnology industry
  • to develop the basic use of personal computers application relevant to a work function
  • to establish employability skills with 80 hours of onsite vocational placement.

Entry requirements

  • Energy Skills Queensland recommends that students should have completed Year 10 with passes in Mathematics, English and Science and have a minimum entry age of 14.
  • If you hold a current White Card and a current First Aid Certificate please ensure you bring the original documents with you for sighting upon enrolment.
  • To access Certificate 3 Guarantee funding for this course the prospective student must meet all the subsidy eligibility.
  • After enrolment, all applicants must complete a short quiz on Literacy and Numeracy levels using the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) prior to orientation dates or prior to the first day of class.

Occupational Health and Safety is a critical unit in your course. It is normally a prerequisite to all of the units in the qualification and generally completed within your first two weeks of class. You cannot attend any work experience or vocational placement without already holding this unit or completing it in class.

Resources required

  • Students will require protective clothing, steel capped boots, Casio FX82 scientific calculator, a ring binder with suitable ruled paper, and a pen.  Students are to bring the calculator on the first day.
  • An optional text book "Electrical Trade Principles" (approximately $105.00) by Jeffrey Hampson and Steven Hanssen can be obtained through most bookstores (not available from TAFE Queensland Gold Coast).

Timetable

Classes are held Monday-Friday from 8.00am-3.45pm for 10 weeks at Ashmore, E Block.  Vocational placement is included in the 10 weeks.

Placement

Vocational Placement is used to link the skills and knowledge acquired during your qualification. It provides the opportunity to develop your skills in a practical environment. The Certificate II in Electrotechnology requires you to undertake a minimum of 80 hours of vocational placement to attain your certificate. We encourage all students to be proactive in finding a placement as an opportunity to develop a relationship within the Electrical industry. You may find your placement prior to the commencement of your course, however for legal, liability and insurance reasons you must not start at your agreed workplace until after your course has commenced and insurance is in place.

Finding a placement:

  • Your placement needs to be within the electrotechnology field, examples include: a licensed electrician, security installations, telecommunications, switchboard manufacturing, marine electrical, home/business automation, energy sector or mining.
  • While on placement you will be insured by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast and not paid.
  • Placement can be undertaken one day per week and/or two allocated weeks.
  • This is an opportunity to demonstrate an appropriate attitude and interest in the Electrotechnology field, increasing your chance of future employment.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • and don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.
