Gain trade qualifications in mobile plant technology

To study for this Certificate III you will need to be an existing contracted apprentice in the field of mobile plant technology. The Certificate III will qualify you to service and repair mechanical components of mobile plant including engines, transmissions and suspension systems. If you have previous industry experience you may be able to gain course credits and finish your studies sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning. Training is delivered in workshops, in the classroom and at your place of work.

The apprentice undertaking this role will primarily service and repair the mechanical parts such as the engine, transmission (clutch, gear box and differential), and the suspension systems (springs, steering, brakes, wheels and tyres). They will perform tasks including discussing problems with drivers/users to discover faults and carry out their own diagnostic procedures. They will repair and service engines, cooling systems, exhaust systems, diesel fuel systems, engine forced induction systems and clutch assemblies. In addition, they will repair and service manual and automatic transmissions, braking systems, hydraulic systems, final drive assemblies and steering and suspension systems. The repair of ignition, electronic engine and drive management systems is also encompassed in the heavy vehicle mobile equipment mechanic’s duties. This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of mobile plant vehicles in the automotive service and repair industry. It is suitable for entry into the mining, construction and agricultural environment. Course details

Many TAFE Queensland Gold Coast apprenticeships now offer the option of more on-the-job training and therefore less time spent attending TAFE. Wherever this is the case a TAFE Queensland Gold Coast teacher is assigned to attend your workplace to deliver training and assess your skills and knowledge.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast has structured college based training for various course competencies that are not practised regularly in the workplace so many employers may still choose to send their apprentice to TAFE to learn those skills, however, this is done by negotiation between the employer and the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast teacher.

You may be able to obtain recognition for your work or life experiences under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Speak to your teacher in the first session to start this process.
