Learn the fundamentals of small business management!

This is a ‘need-to-know’ or ‘eyes-wide-open’ course in that it covers the principles that small business owners need to be aware of, otherwise the risk of failure will be high.

It is an information course covering: the business environment, getting into a small business, business legal structures, valuing a business, financing a business, strategic and operational planning, budgeting, marketing and e-commerce as related to marketing, financial analysis, customers, staff, taxation, business law, risk assessment and getting out of business.

The following topics are covered:

Valuing a business for purchase or sale:

  • “rule of thumb” valuations
  • the valuation information in the balance sheet

The rules for financing a company:

  • maintaining the profitability and liquidity objectives

  • Please bring a pen and notebook.
  • Work books and handouts are supplied.
  • Students need to present their Confirmation of Enrolment to the car park attendant each week to be eligible for discounted parking.

Timetable

Classes are conducted In an informal class situation where interaction is encouraged both with other students and with the teacher.

Classes are offered on:

  • Saturday 4 November - Saturday 18 November 2017 from 9.00am-3.30pm (3 sessions) at Southport, Level 1 (Ground Floor), Room 108

Please note - This course is offered once or twice a week on specific days each week. Throughout the year we vary the days that each delivery package may be offered to suit students’ needs and availability. Students are enrolling in specific days for the duration of the course. Refer to the dates on your Confirmation of Enrolment.

Outcome

The course is suitable for new venture start-ups, supervisory and management roles, and self-employment.  Participants will be confident in preparing to start their own business, aware of the many potential pitfalls associated with a new venture.
