Gain trade qualifications in boat building and repairs

The Certificate III is available to existing contracted apprentices in the field of marine fabrication or International students. The Certificate III will qualify you to produce templates and patterns from full size detail drawings, conduct fit-outs, install engineering drive systems and carry out repairs to wooden, fibreglass and composite craft. If you have previous industry experience you may be able to gain course credits and finish your studies sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning. Training is delivered in workshops, in the classroom and at your place of work.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol into this program students need to have completed a Training Contract with an employer, and therefore to be signed up as an apprentice.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast recommends the following:

  • You will have successfully completed Year 10 in a Queensland secondary school or equivalent.
  • If under 16 years of age you will need to fill out an Application for Dispensation form prior to enrolment.
  • Admission may be on the basis of maturity and other relevant work experience.

Resources required

Students are required to wear steel capped safety work boots and protective clothing (your teacher and/or employer will advise what this includes).

Timetable

Delivery is held over 4 years at Coomera Marine using a combination of day release and/or block training and TAFE attendance.

The approved hours for an individual apprentice will vary according to the units of competency specified in their individual training plan.

Disclaimer

Not all electives available at all campuses

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. For more information on the number of units funded for this course visit Queensland Training Information Services.

Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee, at the time of induction.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. The student and employer contribution fee will be outlined in the training place and agreed to, prior to the commencement of training.

There are no additional costs to study this course.

Outcome

Upon successful completion of Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction students will gain a Certificate III and become a qualified tradesperson working on boat building and repairing.
