Learn English in a supportive environment

This beginner-level Certificate course will teach you how to speak, read and write in English as well as understand basic numeracy. On graduating you will be able to provide personal information in English, participate in informal conversations, comprehend basic spoken and written English, leave telephone messages, read and write texts in English and understand news bulletins. Our supportive staff will also help you develop skills that you can use to continue learning the language outside the classroom.

Certificate I includes topics such as everyday survival English, talking about yourself and your family in English, shopping and banking, reading and writing, and a short description or story in English. Certificate I also includes the use of magazines, newspapers, guest speakers, computer language programs, learning English on the Internet and excursions to help you participate in the Australian community.

This course is intended to provide participants with the following general education outcomes:

  • learning strategies to study in formal learning environments
  • giving personal information
  • comprehending and participating in transactional and casual spoken exchanges
  • comprehending spoken and written information and instructions
  • comprehending and leaving telephone messages
  • comprehending, telling and composing personal recounts

Despite gaining experience as a business owner in America for 17 years, I always felt regret in not having completed formal tertiary education when I had left school. Therefore, upon my return to Australia, I enrolled to study at TAFE Gold Coast where I was able to prove to myself that I didn't need to be 18 years old to make a positive change in my life, whilst securing my pathway into an engineering degree at university.

Entry requirements

There are no special entry requirements. However, you must attend a free interview BEFORE class placement to have your language ability and eligibility assessed. The interview takes approximately 1 – 1½ hours. To arrange an interview please telephone Customer Service on 5581 8300 or visit the Customer Service Centre at Southport, Level 1 (Ground Floor). Please ensure that you bring your passport to the interview.

Following your interview, you can enrol and start at any time*.  Depending on your eligibility, visa and English level, you will be enrolled into one of the following English as a Second Language Training Programs:

  • The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government. In Queensland the AMEP is delivered by TAFE Queensland.
  • SEE is funded by the Commonwealth Government. TAFE Queensland is a contracted training and assessment services provider under the Skills for Education and Employment program (formerly the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program).
  • Students who meet the eligibility criteria for the Certificate 3 Guarantee funding (i.e. who do not have a Certificate III or higher level qualification, are over 15 and are Australian or New Zealand Citizens as well as permanent Queensland residents) but whose English or numeracy levels are such that they might not be able to succeed if enrolled directly into a Certificate III, may be eligible for a Queensland Government funded position in this course. Fees apply.

Resources required

You will require stationery equipment (pens, paper etc) and a bi-lingual dictionary. No additional resources are required for this course.

Timetable

  • Full-time 6-12 months and part-time 12-36 months.
  • Progression is at your own pace.
  • Students can study full-time/part-time/flexible at Southport or Coolangatta.
  • Classes are offered every day from 8.30am-2.30pm.

In order to be eligible for the Certificate, students must complete the compulsory module (Module A) and 6 of the remaining elective modules. The appropriate electives will depend on the student's level and progression through the programme.

Outcome

By improving your English language skills you will be able to successfully participate in the community. You will be given the opportunity to enrol into a higher level of English language study when you have reached the required level of competence. Graduates of Certificate I in Spoken and Written English will have developed language and literacy skills for initial involvement in English-speaking community, work and educational contexts.
