Take the next step to successful management of a residential building business with this technical qualification. Complete this course so you can apply for a Builder - Low Rise Licence.

As the demand for more technical skills emerges in the construction industry, people with higher level qualifications will be in demand. Job openings for this type of work are predicted to be between 25,000 and 50,000 in the next five years across Australia.

In this course you'll learn how to plan building construction work, apply structural principles and supervise on-site construction. You'll learn how to apply building codes, and meet standards and legal requirements to maintain industry quality. You'll also gain business skills such as how to manage contracts and small business finances.

Successful completion of this qualification will allow you to apply for a Builder - Low Rise Licence and set you up to successfully manage a residential building business. Course details

Entry requirements

  • Successful completion of Year 11 or equivalent is recommended.
  • Mature age entry is possible with assumed knowledge where experience and/or qualifications are indicative of successful completion.
  • It is recommended that students have a sound working knowledge of the construction industry e.g. 12 months working on construction sites or 12 months experience working in a builder`s office.
  • It is recommended that students have literacy and numeracy skills in line with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) at Level 4.
  • It is highly recommended that students have sound computer skills in the area of word processing, spreadsheets and internet research. You will require access to a personal computer (PC).
  • Students will also need access to the internet.
  • This course has additional entry requirements if you wish to take advantage of the subsidised Higher Level Skills funding option. You must have completed a Certificate III qualification or hold a licence relevant to the construction industry (must provide copies) as well as meet all other subsidy eligibility.  If you do not hold a trade Certificate III qualification you will need to pay the Fee For Service price, or check other funding available. Prospective students that only hold an electrical work licence in Queensland but not an electrical trade qualification (Certificate III) are not eligible to receive funding.
  • This course has additional entry requirements if you wish to take advantage of the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding option.  You must be currently working in the Construction Industry (provide evidence) as well as meet all other subsidy eligibility. Please request a CSQ Declaration form from Customer Service to apply for this funding.

Resources required

  • Students are required to bring pens, a notepad and a USB memory stick or hard drive.
  • Students must also have access to a PC with access to the internet, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Textbooks and supplies are not included in the cost of the course.

Timetable

  • Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm-8.30pm at Ashmore, C Block.  (See Units by Term attachment.)
  • This course is offered through a combination of flexible study options.
  • Students will need to allow approximately 1290 hours which includes online self-paced learning, workshop tutorial sessions, online discussions, research and assessment activities.
  • The Certificate IV in Building and Construction will take a maximum of two years to complete.
  • Students will have the opportunity to contact teachers Monday to Friday via phone or email as well as through discussion posts and online chat rooms as needed.
  • Extensive use of the internet is required.

To successfully complete the course students will need to devote the approximate hours as listed below:

Self-paced online learning - approx. 840 hours
Online discussions - approx. 60 hours
Online classroom - approx. 145 hours
Assessments - approx. 245 hours

Payment Plan

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.
