Take the first step in financial services with this entry-level qualification in bookkeeping and bookkeeping.  You'll learn specialised skills and knowledge that will prepare you to enter the workforce as a bookkeeper or accountant. The sector is currently experiencing strong growth, with the Australian Government expecting to see at least 50,000 job openings in the next five years.

With our highly qualified and experienced teaching team you will be guided through your education in core units including preparation of financial reports and operational budget and production. You will also develop specific skills such as computerised accounting, payroll and BAS.

Our dual qualification will help you understand the underlying principles of accounting and legal compliance as well as how to prepare payrolls and business activity statements and operate computerised bookkeeping and accounting software.  It also covers industry fundamentals including accounts receivable and payable, balance sheets and their computerised application, creating budgets, managing creditors and inventory.  Students are taught how to prepare financial reports, maintain a payroll system, develop and use complex spreadsheets, use MYOB and carry out business activity and instalment activity statement (BAS) tasks.  You will have real time access to relevant websites and documentation, and industry experienced teachers will provide all the guidance you need to succeed.

This course meets the minimum academic requirements of the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) for registration as a BAS agent. Anyone providing a BAS service must be registered by the TPB. For further details please see http://www.tpb.gov.au.

Participants seeking professional identification and registration will need to ensure they meet current requirements under the law.

Successfully completing this qualification will give you the specialised skills to work across a range of roles including bookkeeper, assistant accountant, accounts clerk, payroll officer or BAS agent once registration requirements are satisfied. Entry requirements

  • It is preferred, but not essential, that students have completed Year 12 with advanced computer skills.
  • It is advisable to have a Windows based personal computer as there may be some compatibility issues for those using Apple Mac computers.
  • Word and Excel skills are preferable.
  • To access Higher Level Skills funding for this course the prospective student must meet all subsidy eligibility.

Resources required

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop or portable device to class.
  • Textbooks and supplies are not included in the cost of this course.
  • A list of recommended and required resources will be provided at Orientation or during the first class.

Timetable

  • Full-time classes are held on Monday 10.15am-5.15pm, Tuesday 10.15am-3.15pm and Thursday 10.15am-3.00pm at Southport, Level 3, Room 303.  Face-to-face classes are held over 6 months however students have 9 months to complete all assignments.
  • Part-time classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm-8.30pm for 12 months at Southport, Level 4, Room 402.
  • Classes involve lectures, practical demonstrations, group discussion, group projects and simulated work environments at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.
  • Assessments include demonstrations, presentations, observation checklists, projects, portfolios, assignments and examination case studies by the teaching team.
  • In addition to the hours you will spend in class, it is expected that you will spend at least 16 hours a week outside of class undertaking your own personal study.
  • Timetables are subject to change.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Concession

  • Graduates will gain the knowledge and skills to work within the financial services departments of corporate and government sectors.
  • Career opportunities include: Commerce, banking, finance and insurance as an Assistant Accountant, Bookkeeper, Accounts Clerk, Payroll Officer. Tasks may include preparation of Business Activity Statements (BAS) and other office taxes, and preparing accounting reports for management.
  • Upon successful completion of this qualification you will be able to oversee the financial affairs of your own business or you may seek to gain employment in bookkeeping and accounts payable and receivable or as a payroll or stock control assistant.  There is also the opportunity to further your studies with a Diploma of Accounting.
