Music to your peers

Get your break in the music industry sooner with this advanced level qualification. This course will give you access to industry-standard studios and the foundation skills needed to operate equipment and software. Research shows that skill sets traditionally associated with training in the creative industries, such as communication and problem-solving, are among the most desired attributes in the future job market. This qualification will give you the core skills needed to work as a music industry professional, performer, or composer in both the creative industries and in corporate settings.

You will get specialised skills in composition techniques; developing and maintaining stage craft; performing as a part of a group; preparing a program for performance; and providing freelance services. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you one-on-one guidance to prepare you for a career in the music industry.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be required to attend an audition at Coomera. The applicant will be required to perform two prepared pieces with their chosen instrument or vocals which showcase a variety of skills and musical expertise. These pieces may be original music or covers, and backing tracks may be used (minus the auditioned instrument or vocal line). A drum kit, guitar amps, microphones and P.A. will be provided. Following the audition the panel will conduct a short interview with the applicant.  To book in for an audition, please email your contact details to studentmanagement_coomera.goldcoast@tafe.qld.edu.au and you will be contacted to organise a suitable audition time.

The following entry requirements are historically indicative of a successful application thus demonstrating the applicant's ability to cope with the program workload:

  • Performance audition including basic music theory questionnaire.
  • Ability to utilise the interview process to demonstrate suitability.
  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Mature aged students who are unable to provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate will need to submit a detailed work history or resume prior to enrolment.
  • Students under 18 years of age by application.

Basic computer skills should include:

  • A reasonable working knowledge of the PC Windows and/or MAC OS environment
  • File management
    • Ability to logically organise files in directories
    • File creation, saving and version control
    • Utilisation of internal and external storage devices
  • Internet skills including searching, emailing, opening and saving of attachments
  • Basic word processing
  • Application help menu utilisation

VET Student Loan (VSL) - All applicants enrolling into this Diploma using the VET Student Loan option must provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 4 qualification or above issued in Australia.  Applicants that are not able to produce a copy of this document are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test.

Resources required

Students must bring their own portable instruments such as guitars, strings, keyboards, percussion etc.

Students are required to purchase the following resources (teachers will provide details including suitable models and suppliers for each listed item during relevant class times):

  • 1 x 1TB external hard drive to store/backup all class project files and learning resources
  • Personal stationery
  • Various industry memberships will be recommended

Text books and above listed resources are not included in the program fees.

TAFE will provide access to:

  • Photocopier (pay per use)
  • Computer Labs - high-end Apple Mac and Windows
  • Learning environment - class rooms, editing suites, drawing rooms, studio space, tables, chairs, white boards, overhead projectors
  • Library reference material.

Coomera boasts industry standard production facilities including four Non-Linear Editing (NLE) suites, seven sound recording studios, a purpose built auditorium, a large multi-purpose black box theatre studio (sound stage), state of the art live sound reinforcement and lighting systems, full complement of backline musical instruments including acoustic/electronic drum kits, pianos/keyboards and a variety of guitar/bass amplifiers.

Timetable

Full-time classes are held on Tuesday 8.00am-12.15pm, Wednesday 9.00am-4.15pm and Thursday 8am-3pm for 12 months (2 semesters) at Coomera, A Block, Level 1, Room A.01.015 (Rehearsal Room). Timetable subject to change.

A combination of face-to-face and tutorial sessions is offered at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast as delivery techniques for theory and practical sessions involving small groups and individual activities. Where possible, sessions are conducted within a simulated workplace environment.

Total hours: 800

Weekly hours: 15 hours in the classroom (applied learning – demonstration and application, activities, collaborative projects, group discussion)

Independent learning: 5 hours minimum (content exploration and meaning – lecture screencast and videos, YouTube videos, Wikipedia articles and websites)

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.
