CUA51015 Diploma of Screen and Media qualification is part of the Screen and Media Training Package. It is designed for people who want to expand on their skills and knowledge of the media industry and in particular establishing networks, managing projects and taking part in the production of media.

This course aims to provide a program of study focused on the film, video and multimedia industries. It develops skills essential to the crafts of scriptwriting, video production, and post production, and also provides essential technical skills in camera work, sound, lighting and editing.

The diploma provides an opportunity for students to extend their skills and knowledge through the development of their own projects. It also offers participants the opportunity to develop expertise in the following areas:

  • Production management
  • Filming a range of video content
  • Advanced skills in sound recording and editing
  • Production skills
  • Digital editing techniques

Outcomes cater for employment or further study in film or broadcast media and related disciplines.

Entry requirements

The following entry requirements are historically indicative of a successful application thus demonstrating the applicant's ability to cope with the program workload:

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Mature aged students who are unable to provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate will need to submit a detailed work history or resume prior to enrolment.
  • Students under 18 years of age by application.

Basic computer skills should include:

  • A reasonable working knowledge of a personal computer running Windows and/or MAC operating system
  • File management
  • Ability to logically organise files in directories
  • File creation, saving and version control
  • Utilisation of internal and external storage devices
  • Internet skills including searching, emailing, opening and saving of attachments
  • Basic word processing
  • Application help menu utilisation

VET Student Loan (VSL) - All applicants enrolling into this Diploma using the VET Student Loan option must provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 4 qualification or above issued in Australia.  Applicants that are not able to produce a copy of this document are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test before enrolment.

Resources required

TAFE will provide access to:

  • Photocopier (pay per use)
  • Learning environment - classrooms, editing suites, drawing rooms, studio space, tables, chairs, whiteboards, overhead projectors, video and still camera equipment, audio recording equipment, backdrops, variety of camera mounting systems
  • Library reference material

Students are required to purchase the following resources (teachers will provide details including suitable models and suppliers for each listed item during relevant class times):

  • 1 x 1TB external hard drive to store/backup all class project files and learning resources (approximately $200)
  • Personal stationery
  • Textbook: ‘Producing Videos: A Complete Guide’ by Martha Mollison 3rd Edition. ISBN 978-1742370569 (approximately $50).  This is not compulsory but is highly recommended.
  • Various industry memberships will be recommended

Timetable

Full-time classes are held on Monday 8.00am-3.00pm, Tuesday 8.00am-3.00pm and Wednesday 9.00am-1.15pm for 12 months at Coomera, A Block, Level 1, Room A.01.039 (Black Box Theatre). Timetable subject to change.

The notional duration of the course in hours is:

  • Supervised: 640 hours in the classroom (applied learning – demonstration and application, activities, collaborative projects, group discussion)
  • Non-supervised: 560 hours (content exploration and meaning – lecture screencast and videos, YouTube videos, Wikipedia articles and websites)
  • Volume of learning: 1200 hours

This course is Austudy approved for full-time study.

Learning Options
The course is delivered as a full-time program which will require the students to attend training and assessment activities for three days a week, 40 weeks of the year at the Foxwell Road, Coomera Campus.

Within the classroom, participants are offered flexible delivery using a combination of structured classes, tutorials, workshops, and practical projects.

This course is conducted at our state-of-the-art Coomera production facility which boasts industry-standard video editing suites, sound recording studios and a Black Box Theatre for video production. The OptiTrack 3D Motion Capture System and high definition video cameras round out the equipment you will be able to utilise, while Dell Precision and Apple Mac Pro workstations are the perfect places to apply the finishing edit to your film.

Students will also be expected to work unsupervised on specific projects outside their normal class times.

Software used throughout the course is the Adobe Creative Cloud Collection and AVID Media Composer.

Assessment Process
Throughout all assessments, work health and safety procedures must be followed.

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.
