Launch you career in digital media

Make a start on your career in the media with this entry-level course. This qualification will give you the foundation skills needed to work in a number of assistant roles in radio, film, and sound. Research shows that creativity, communication and problem-solving will be the most desired skills in the future job market. This course will give you the core skills needed to work in both the creative industries and in corporate settings.

Learn the practical skills and knowledge to write content for a range of media, create visual design components, follow the design process, and develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to prepare you for a career in media.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work in a variety of roles as either a  a website designer, website front end developer, 3D modeller/animator, video editor, photo editor or sound editor.  It also provides educational pathways into specialised TAFE diplomas such as Interactive Media, Film and TV and Sound Production with credits awarded for units completed.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast uses Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Audition, and Dreamweaver) as well as Autodesk animation products such as Maya and 3ds max.

Students will have access to the latest Apple Macintosh and Windows PC platforms.

Entry requirements

  • Entry is possible (whether having achieved Year 10 or as a mature age student) with assumed knowledge. Specific knowledge and a background in the subject will help with understanding the study material.
  • Students must have basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills. English and Mathematics to Grade 10 level is also recommended.
  • Computer skills relating to the following areas of computer use ARE REQUIRED:
    • File management skills (i.e. creating, saving, renaming, moving and deleting files and folders)
    • Familiarity with Windows and Mac operating systems
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and use of a Web Browser.
  • To access Certificate 3 Guarantee funding for this course the prospective student must meet all the subsidy eligibility.

Resources required

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland Gold Coast's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.  This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Timetable

  • This course is delivered full-time for 6 months at Coomera, A Block, Level 4, Room A.04.009.
  • Classes are held on Monday and Tuesday from 8.00am-3.00pm.
  • Classes are delivered face-to-face in our multimedia labs and students learn through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, online resources and practical application. Where possible, sessions are conducted within a simulated workplace environment.
  • Student independent learning self-directed activities: 8-10 hours per week.

Course commencement is subject to minimum enrolment numbers.

Payment Plan

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • and don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

Outcome

Please note that successful completion of this qualification will enable direct entry into either the Diploma of Screen and Media or Diploma of Graphic Design.
