As a TAFE Queensland partnership student you will gain "on-the-job" clinical experience in mental health, rehabilitation and acute care settings, working as part of a team under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RN). Places are available across Queensland at the following Ramsay facilities:

This qualification is offered as a mixed mode program (with Residential Schools) delivered over 18 months with a full-time study load.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • vocational placement at a Ramsay Health Care (Queensland) facility
  • perform fundamental nursing procedures safely and within organisational guidelines
  • perform complex nursing procedures safely and within organisational guidelines
  • administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy
  • apply nursing practice in the primary health care setting
  • apply principles of wound management in the clinical environment
  • communicate with clients and colleagues
  • contribute to a preliminary health assessment
  • contribute to the care of a client with an acute health problem
  • contribute to the care of a client with a chronic health problem
  • follow organisation's workplace health and safety policies
  • gather and use client based observations and information

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to seek registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Upon successful registration you may find work as an Enrolled Nurse within a diverse range of healthcare settings.

Entry requirements

The January 2018 intake is now open for enrolment. To register your interest email ramsay.goldcoast@tafe.qld.edu.au.  Students will be contacted by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast to enrol into the program.

  • This is a direct entry program. It is recommended that applicants continue with QTAC submissions for any nursing programs within their region requiring QTAC entry.

There are no entry requirements outlined in the National Training Package, however TAFE Queensland requires the following entry requirements be met:

  • Completed Year 12 or equivalent with sound achievement in English, Mathematics and computer skills or mature age with sound language, literacy, and numeracy skills.
  • Permanent resident of Australia.  If you are originally from a non-English speaking background you are required to supply evidence of an IELTS score, achieving a minimum score of 6 in each of the four components of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Evidence to be submitted with your application.
  • Prepared to participate in a minimum of 400 hours of vocational placement.
  • Mandatory documentation is required in order to participate in the hours of vocational placement (see Placement section below for further details)
  • Access to the internet and have an email account.
  • Microsoft Word or Office for Mac on your computer.
  • Must be available to attend each mandatory Residential School as scheduled.  All students are to arrange their own travel and accommodation requirements at their own expense.

VET Student Loan (VSL) - All applicants enrolling into this Diploma using the VET Student Loan option must provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 4 qualification or above issued in Australia.  Applicants that are not able to produce a copy of this document are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test before enrolment.

Ramsay Health Care requires the following English Language requirements to be met:

  • Written evidence that the candidate completed four (4) years (full time equivalent) of education in English at secondary, vocational or tertiary level in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America.

OR

  • Written evidence that the candidate undertook and completed their secondary education, taught and assessed in English, to the level required to meet the above academic requirements for entry into this qualification.

OR

  • Achievement of a minimum of 7 on each band (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic modules. To be achieved within the timeframe as set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia‚Äč (NMBA).

  • Achievement of a pass at “A” or “B” level in each of the four components (reading, writing, listening and speaking) of the Occupational English Test (OET) for Nurses. To be achieved within the timeframe as set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

To register your interest email ramsay.goldcoast@tafe.qld.edu.au.  You will then be emailed by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast to process your enrolment.  If an applicant has not completed Year 12 or equivalent, they will need to do a Basic and Key Skills Builder (BKSB) assessment.  When eligibility is met, your enrolment will be processed.  You will then be shortlisted and proceed to a selection process with your preferred Ramsay Health Care facility. 

Students who are unsuccessful in the selection process can continue in their study of HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing Mixed Mode Learning (with Residential Schools) with TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.  While you will not be in the Ramsay partnership it is still possible your clinical placements may be in a Ramsay Health Care facility.

IMPORTANT: For Registration as an Enrolled Nurse, all applicants, including internationally qualified applicants, who seek initial registration in Australia, must demonstrate that they have the necessary English language skills. Condition of Enrolment – Privacy

  • National Student Register:  Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, all students enrolled in an approved nursing or midwifery course of study must be registered for the duration of study or until they are no longer enrolled in an approved course of study. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, working in partnership with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) maintains this Student Register and reflects the profile of students as advised by Australia’s education providers. The Student Register is not public and, in relation to students, is limited to recording student health impairment matters or criminal convictions of a serious nature. AHPRA has no role to play in the academic progress or conduct of students which continues to be a core responsibility of educational providers. Providing student details to AHPRA is a condition placed upon the Institute as your education provider, and therefore it is a condition of entry into this course that you consent to the release of your details accordingly.   • Vocational Placement -   Student details are provided to Ramsay Health Care for the purposes of vocational placement. Vocational placement is a core element of this course and therefore it is a condition of enrolment that you consent to the release of your information accordingly.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Resources required

Students require the following:

  1. Nursing Kit: Nursing Kits are no longer available for purchase through TAFE Queensland Gold Coast. Please see attached Nursing Kit Contents List. It is recommended that students bring their Nursing Kit to all Residential Schools.
  2. Textbook: 'Essential Clinical Skills: Enrolled/Division 2 Nurses' (3rd edition) by Joanne Tollefson, ISBN 9780170259705.  Students will need to source this book either online or via a bookshop.
  3. Nursing polo shirt with TAFE logo: This is the MANDATORY UNIFORM for ALL Residential Schools and ALL vocational placements. Students will be advised at Orientation of the requirements and cost.
  4. Additional uniform requirements: long pants (black only) and low heel, enclosed, nursing/walking shoes (black only). This is the MANDATORY UNIFORM for ALL Practical lab sessions and vocational placement. More information will be provided to students after start of study.

Students experiencing internet connection issues have the option of purchasing the following item:

  1. Offline content on USB: $50.00 including postage and handling. (Content is mailed out after the first Census date). IMPORTANT NOTE: Internet hyperlinks will not work in offline content.

Any resources issued through TAFE Queensland are non-refundable once provided to the student.

Technical Specifications
Prospective students must have the following computer technical specifications before they can access the course materials and participate in the learning program:

  • Minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels
  • Windows PC or Apple Mac - please note: portable devices (smartphones, iPads, tablets, slates) do not necessarily support all the features of Connect, our Learning Management System, and may not work properly for submitting assessments
  • Computer running a minimum of Windows 7 or Apple Macintosh OSX 10.8
  • Connect has been designed to function on these minimum browser versions: Google Chrome (latest) (highly recommended for students), Firefox (latest), Safari (latest), Internet Explorer 10 - older versions of browsers may not correctly display information
  • ADSL or Cable Broadband is highly recommended with a minimum of 1GB per/month of data as you will be required to download online resources for your studies.  You will need this capacity to ensure you do not exceed your monthly limits.  Please check with your ISP on how to monitor and avoid excess data fees.
  • Audio playback enabled on your computer (many activities use audio interaction)
  • Students may require a headset with the capacity to listen and talk back (USB connection headsets are known to give superior sound quality)
  • When downloading documents, it is recommended that they are saved to your computer prior to opening or working with them.

Microsoft Word (or an alternative)
To read and complete assessments you are required to have Microsoft Word 2010 installed on your computer. However, if you are using MS Word 2007 or below there is an option to save your document to an older format .doc. Please choose this format if you are to use this version of Microsoft Word

These software packages have the function to be able to export documents as MS Word DOC format. Students using these packages can export their work into this format prior to submission.

Timetable

This course requires full-time study for 18 months incorporating a variety of delivery methods including:

  • Online content (please note: students require a personal email address, and proficient computing skills to be able to access online materials and navigate around an online learning environment).
  • Practical skills development in simulated nursing labs and hands-on experience in vocational placement. Practical skills are presented and assessed at three mandatory Residential Schools (one per semester). Residential Schools may be scheduled between 7.30am to 9.00pm for up to 8 hours per day.  Semester 1 and Semester 2 requires attendance for 2 weeks at each Residential School.  Semester 3 requires attendance for one week.
  • Successful students will then participate in a minimum of 400 mandatory vocational placement hours throughout the course.
  • Participation in the course is supported by expert facilitators who are available via email, chat rooms, forums or by appointment.
  • As an online student, theoretical study is done in the comfort of your home with the majority of exams and assignments submitted online.

It is expected that students will need to commit to approximately 30-35 hours per week or the equivalent of 4 days per week to study.

Mandatory Residential School Dates for January 2018:
Semester 1:  Monday 23 April - Friday 4 May 2018
Semester 2:  Monday 22 October - Friday 2 November 2018
Semester 3:  Monday 1 April - Friday 5 April 2019

**Dates are correct at time of printing however Semester 2 and 3 Residential School dates are subject to change.

Assessment methods and tools may include: oral tasks (questions), written tasks (workbook, exams), online tasks (multiple choice, exams, uploading of assignments), group work and discussions (case studies, role plays, presentations), practical skills demonstration (with case studies and observation checklists) and vocational placement.

Placement

Vocational Placement
Students will be required to attend Vocational Placement each semester to demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills in the workplace. Students must complete a minimum of 400 hours of vocational placement throughout the duration of their program. This is a mandatory industry requirement of HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing.

In accordance with industry expectation students must attend mandatory vocational placement requirements as stated below:

Placement will consist of:

  • Semester 1: 2 weeks full-time
  • Semester 2: 4 weeks full-time (may be broken into two x two week blocks as determined by the Ramsay Health Care facility’s preference)
  • Semester 3: 5 weeks full-time (may be broken into two blocks as determined by the Ramsay Health Care facility’s preference)
  • A variety of shifts including morning and afternoon shifts as determined by the facility’s preference (*morning shifts may start as early as 6.00am and evening shifts may finish as late as 11.00pm).
  • Night and weekend shifts may be an option for Semester 3 students and will only be determined by the facility’s preference and negotiation between the Ramsay Health Care and TAFE Queensland
  • Part-time placements are not supported by Ramsay Health Care as they are not conducive to assessment purposes.

Students are responsible for:

  • organising their own transport to and from study and vocational placement
  • organising leave with their employer (if applicable)
  • planning financially for their unpaid vocational placement

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast's Vocational Placement team will work in collaboration with Ramsay Health Care to coordinate vocational placement activity, and students will be provided with due notice for placement.  The health industry has predetermined processes for scheduling placement availability and students are directed not to request individual placement directly with Ramsay Health Care. All placement requests must be initiated through TAFE Queensland.

Mandatory Documentation
Please note: The Health Industry dictates that TAFE Queensland Gold Coast must ensure that all students going on placement in health care facilities hold the following documentation. Students are not eligible to attend mandatory vocational placement assessment without these documents.  There will be a strict timeframe for students to provide the necessary placement requirements. Not attending vocational placement assessment will delay course progression.

Routine Documentation:

1.  Current First Aid including CPR
If you have a current Australian First Aid Certificate with current CPR, forward a JP certified copy of your Statement of Attainment with your enrolment paperwork. The CPR component will need to be updated annually and it is the student’s responsibility to ensure they provide evidence of currency to TAFE Queensland Gold Coast. If you DO NOT have a current Australian First Aid Certificate, this certificate is delivered as part of this course.

2.  Working with Children Check
Queensland students - The Working with Children Check (Blue Card Application) must be completed in person for Queensland students who live less than 50 km from TAFE Queensland Gold Coast, Southport Campus.  Information can be viewed at http://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au   All original identification documents need to be sighted and students are requested to bring these documents with them for submission of their application.  If a student resides more than 50 km from TAFE Queensland Gold Coast, the ‘Confirmation of identity’ form must be submitted with the Blue Card application.  Students may submit this by email or in person.
Interstate students - must refer to their state websites for further information on how to apply for a Working with Children Check.

3.  Australian Federal Police Check (AFP)
Potential students are advised to contact the Vocational Placement Coordinator should they have any notification or criminal history as this may impact on their acceptance by facilities for placement assessment and therefore affect course outcomes. Students must be able to provide an original Australian Federal Police check on request of a facility at any time. Please refer to the Australian Federal Police website to download the application form at http://www.afp.gov.au.  Approximate cost $45.00 (N.B: The certificate MUST be issued by the Australian Federal Police.  All other types of police checks will not be accepted.) Your current AFP documentation must be no older than 3 months prior to the start of study.

Immunisation Documentation:

4.  You must have commenced the vaccination regimes listed below before or at the time of enrolment.  You must provide full vaccination history for all of the following vaccination regimes, including serology evidence of immunity where indicated. You may also need to contact your local doctor to assist you with this evidence.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Vaccination and serology evidence requirements may alter during your studies, in accordance with changes to industry requirements and/or Australian Immunisation Guidelines.

  • Hepatitis B - you must commence or have undertaken an age appropriate course of vaccination.  Students must not undertake an accelerated course of vaccination. To prove immunity you will need to have a blood test (serology) after the completion of the full vaccination course.
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) - provide serology or evidence of completed vaccinations.
  • MMR (Measles Mumps and Rubella) - provide serology or evidence of completed vaccinations.
  • dTpa (Adult Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis) - provide evidence that you have received a booster within the last 10 years.
  • Influenza is recommended but not mandatory.
  • Completion of the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Tuberculosis Screening form.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure their documentation remains current throughout their studies.
  • Any costs associated in acquiring the above documents are in addition to course costs and will be borne by the student.
  • TAFE Queensland Gold Coast strongly recommends that prior to enrolment students consider their eligibility to obtain the above documentation.

Important Information

Vocational Placement

  • It is highly recommended that prior to enrolment students consider their eligibility to obtain the mandatory documentation.
  • Mandatory requirements for vocational placement may also include the completion of specific online learning per Ramsay Health Care facility requirements. Students are responsible for ensuring this is completed prior to the required date.
  • Cancellation fees may apply to students in the event of cancellations of allocated placements. Cancellation of placement requires valid evidence of extenuating circumstances.
  • Students are responsible for keeping a copy of all assessment records including vocational placement assessments.  Requests for personal copies will incur a fee.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front, or you are not eligible for VET Student Loan, you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Note: If you are accessing a VET Student Loan, and there is a difference between the loan cap amount and the total cost of your course (for example your loan cap amount is $10,000 and your course costs $11,000 - there is a $1,000 difference), you are required to pay the difference.

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability.

VET Student Loans

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prior to applying for a VET Student Loan, please ensure that you have read and understood the VET Student Loans Pre-Enrolment Information

VET Student Loans are an interest-free loan from the Australian Government that help students pay for their education and training.

TAFE Queensland receives the full loan amount for your course directly from the Government, and you repay your loan through the Australian taxation system once your income reaches a certain threshold.

You are eligible for a VET Student Loan if you:

You must demonstrate academic suitability by:

  • providing a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (year 12 certificate); OR
  • providing evidence of successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English), OR
  • are assessed as a minimum of Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ASCF) in both reading and numeracy

VET student loans will not be approved for students who do not meet the eligibility requirements. VET student loans gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Please note that all students enrolling in an accredited course are required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front, or you are not eligible for VET Student Loan, you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Note: If you are accessing a VET Student Loan, and there is a difference between the loan cap amount and the total cost of your course (for example your loan cap amount is $10,000 and your course costs $11,000 - there is a $1,000 difference), you are required to pay the difference.

Additional costs

Any costs associated in acquiring mandatory documentation and in relation to attending the Residential School and vocational placement are in addition to course costs and will be borne by the student.

Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, students may be eligible to apply for registration as an Enrolled Nurse with the AHPRA Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - a fee will be payable. Successful AHPRA applicants may work as an Enrolled Nurse (EN) in health care facilities that may include private and public hospitals, aged care facilities, hostels, medical centres and a range of other health care facilities.
