Take the next step to successful management of a residential, commercial or industrial building business with this technical qualification. Complete this course so you can apply for a Builder - Low Rise or Builder - Medium Rise licence.

In the building and construction industry, there is high demand for people with advanced technical skills. This translates to predicted job openings of over 50,000 in the next five years across Australia for people with advanced building and construction skills.

This course will teach you building and construction theory and practices related to low and medium-rise buildings. You will extend your knowledge to building surveying, job supervision and safety management. Our industry-expert teachers will help you develop project management skills in contract administration, project planning and costing, and resource and financial management.

Successful completion of this qualification meets the requirements for both a Builder - Medium Rise and Builder - Low Rise licence and will equip you with the skills you need to successfully manage a construction business for residential, commercial or industrial buildings. Course details

Entry requirements

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Mature age entry is possible with assumed knowledge where experience and/or qualifications are indicative of successful completion.
  • Students must have literacy and numeracy skills.
  • This course has additional entry requirements if you wish to take advantage of the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding option.  You must be an existing worker in the building and construction industry (provide evidence) as well as meet all other subsidy eligibility.  Please request a CSQ Declaration form from Customer Service to apply for this funding.

VET Student Loan (VSL) - All applicants enrolling into this Diploma using the VET Student Loan option must provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 4 qualification or above issued in Australia.  Applicants that are not able to produce a copy of this document are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test before enrolment.

Resources required

  • Students are required to bring pens, a notepad, scientific calculator and a USB memory stick or hard drive.
  • Textbooks and supplies are not included in the cost of the course.
  • A book list, material list and timetable will be distributed at Orientation.

Timetable

  • Students will graduate with the CPC50210 Diploma of Building and Construction (Construction) (18 units).
  • Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday 6.00pm-9.00pm at Ashmore.
  • This course is offered through a combination of flexible study options.
  • The Diploma of Building will take a maximum of 2 years to complete. Those taking advantage of the CSQ funding will complete their studies in 12 months.
  • Students will have the opportunity to contact teachers Monday to Friday via phone or email as well as through discussion posts and online chat rooms as needed.
  • Extensive use of the internet is required.

Many of the units are presented in computer facilities with the latest building management techniques and procedures. Extensive use of the internet is required in class and at home for assessments.

Payment Plan

Note: If you are accessing a VET Student Loan, and there is a difference between the loan cap amount and the total cost of your course (for example your loan cap amount is $10,000 and your course costs $11,000 - there is a $1,000 difference), you are required to pay the difference.

Outcome

The course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to gain employment as a: Builder, Contract Administrator, Site Manager, Building Works Supervisor, Estimator, Building Technician or self-employed Licensed Builder (Medium-Rise).

Students wishing to articulate to a university degree in building, construction management, and building surveying may be required to update their mathematics.  Details of entry and credit to university courses are provided by each university by direct enquiry.

The course delivers to students who wish to enter the building industry in various capacities and articulate to university with approximately one year's credit for the bachelor degree in building.
