This entry-level qualification will set you on the path to seeking an apprenticeship in the automotive industry. Learn the basic skills and knowledge you need to increase your employability. The automotive industry offers the opportunity to get involved in a broad-based skills area driven by new technologies. Automotive employment opportunities are emerging in specialised diagnostic, servicing, repair and maintenance roles.

In this course you will learn basic skills and knowledge required to inspect and service components of the underbody of vehicles including braking, steering, suspension, and exhaust systems. You may also learn about inspecting, testing and servicing batteries, electrical systems and components, and other elective topics. Industry experienced teachers will provide all the support you need to succeed.

Successful completion of this course gives you the skills you need to confidently seek an apprenticeship in a range of automotive occupations such as light or heavy vehicle mechanic, automotive electrician, automotive parts interpreter or diesel fitter. You may also choose to seek employment as a vehicle service assistant in a service or repair business. Course details

Entry requirements

  • Students should contact their School Careers Officer.
  • To enrol students should be 15 years of age at the commencement of the course.
  • Students must be in Year 10, 11 or 12.
  • Admission may be on the basis of maturity and other relevant work experience.
  • Work experience is an integral part of this course and provides you with the opportunity to further your learning while undertaking authentic industry tasks, as well as forming career-building relationships within your field of study.

Occupational Health and Safety is a critical unit in your course. It is normally a prerequisite to all of the units in the qualification and generally completed within your first two weeks of class. You cannot attend any work experience without already holding this unit or completing it in class.

Funding options are available for students that have not currently enrolled in a VET in Schools qualification.  It is important that you carefully consider your course choice before applying. Please speak to your Careers Officer at school for further information.

Resources required

  • Students will need to supply steel capped safety work boots, long sleeved tops and safety glasses.
  • Students can purchase the textbook: "Automotive Mechanics Volume 1", approximately $120.00 available through most bookstores if they wish.  (It is not a mandatory requirement that students purchase the book). It may also be borrowed from the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Library.
  • Students should bring pens, pencils, paper and a calculator.

Timetable

Classes are held on Tuesday from 8.00am-3.45pm for 8 months.

Placement

Students will need to complete up to 120 hours of work experience prior to the end of the course. This will take place in the school holidays.

Units

To attain this qualification students must achieve competency in a total of 14 units, 8 core and 6 electives.

Outcome

After completion of this course students could use this qualification as a stepping stone into an apprenticeship as a heavy road transport mechanic, mobile plant/earth moving mechanic or diesel engine specialist.
