Launch your career in digital media

Make a start on your career in the media with this entry-level course. This qualification will give you the foundation skills needed to work in a number of assistant roles in radio, film, and sound. Research shows that creativity, communication and problem-solving will be the most desired skills in the future job market. This course will give you the core skills needed to work in both the creative industries and in corporate settings.

Learn the practical skills and knowledge to write content for a range of media, create visual design components, follow the design process, and develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to prepare you for a career in media.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work in a variety of roles as either a  a website designer, website front end developer, 3D modeller/animator, video editor, photo editor or sound editor.  It also provides educational pathways into specialised TAFE diplomas such as Interactive Media, Film and TV and Sound Production with credits awarded for units completed.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast uses Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Audition, and Dreamweaver) as well as Autodesk animation products such as Maya and 3ds max.

Students will have access to the latest Apple Macintosh and Windows PC platforms.

Entry requirements

  • Students should contact their School Careers Officer.
  • Students must be enrolled in high school, completing Year 10 or 11.
  • Students must have their application endorsed by the School Careers Officer.
  • To enrol students should be 15 years of age at the commencement of the course.
  • Specific knowledge and a background in the subject will help with understanding the study material.
  • Students must have basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills. English and Mathematics to Grade 10 level is also recommended.

Computer skills relating to the following areas of computer use ARE REQUIRED:

  • File management skills (i.e. creating, saving, renaming, moving and deleting files and folders)
  • Familiarity with Windows and Mac operating systems
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and use of a Web Browser.

Resources required

The school will need to have access to the following to be involved:

  • Apple Mac PC's or laptops
  • Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver) as well as Autodesk products such as 3ds max.
  • Learning environment - class rooms, editing suites, drawing rooms, studio space, tables, chairs, white boards and overhead projectors.

Students ARE REQUIRED to purchase the following resources (TAFE Queensland Gold Coast will provide details including suitable models and suppliers for each listed item during relevant class times):

  • 1 x 8GB external USB stick drive to store/backup all class project files and learning resources (approximately $20)
  • Personal stationery

Textbooks and above listed resources are not included in the program fees.


Classes are held on Tuesday from 8.00am-3.00pm for 12 months at Coomera, A Block, Level 4, Room A.04.008.


To attain this qualification students must achieve competency in 11 units, 3 core and 8 electives.

This course has been especially designed to meet the demands of the technical industry. It is also ideal for anyone wanting to upgrade their current computer skills to gain a recognised qualification.  Students can continue their studies in the Diploma of Graphic Design or Diploma of Screen and Media at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.  Successful completion of this course will allow students to obtain 6 points towards their QCE.
