Learn new skills in blood specimen collection

This skill set reflects the requirements for health care workers whose job role includes the collection of blood via venepuncture.  It is suitable for health care workers in direct client care roles seeking to broaden their skills to include performance of venous blood collection.

To achieve the accredited skill set (HLTSS00059) the candidate must have successfully completed a minimum of 35 hours of vocational placement/work experience.

If you are a practicing health professional and would like to add these techniques to your current skills and knowledge you have the choice of accredited or non-accredited training and, therefore may not be required to undertake vocational placement/work experience. Course details

Qualify and be acknowledged for your experience within the workplace

I had been working within the health sector for 20 years before I committed to completing my Certificate IV in Mental Health. Currently a trainer with the Salvation Army, I knew the next step for me was to formalise my experience and training by completing the course with my fellow employees. Despite all my years of experience within the field, I was both amazed and humbled by my experience at TAFE Gold Coast. The highly qualified and empathetic nature of my teachers made me better understand how I can manage my clients in a more effective manner.

Entry requirements

  • Students must be physically, emotionally and mentally "fit for practice" for the purpose of vocational placement/work experience.
  • Please note:  Students are required to handle equipment (i.e. needles and syringes) for blood collection. Students are also required to perform a minimum of eight live sticks (taking blood from each other under teacher direction) prior to vocational placement/work experience.

There are two options:

  1. Accredited Venous Blood Collection Skill Set.  The student completes the online assessment components, attends the one day workshop and completes the documented 35 hours of blood collection.  This accredited skill set requires that the student must be able to complete 35 documented hours of pathology collection work under the supervision of a person currently working in a Phlebotomist role for at least 18 hours per fortnight. This can be within the student's workplace or will be organised by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast at a QML pathology collection centre. Students who have already completed HLTFIN001 Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures can apply for a credit transfer. Students receive a Statement of Attainment on completion.

  2.  Non-accredited Venous Blood Collection. This requires the student to complete the online assessment component and attend the one day workshop only.  Students do not have to complete the 35 hours of documented blood collection.  Students will receive a Certificate of Participation only.  This is the non-accredited option and therefore is not registered with the National Training Register.
