Gain trade qualifications in marine mechanical technology

To study for this Certificate III you will need to be an existing contracted apprentice in the field of marine mechanical technology. The Certificate III will qualify you to service, repair and diagnose problems in marine engines and marine mechanical equipment. If you have previous industry experience you may be able to gain course credits and finish your studies sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning. Training is delivered in workshops, in the classroom and at your place of work.

The apprentice undertaking this role will be located in a boat workshop or in a combined workshop/retail sales outlet. A Marine Mechanic will work on inboard and outboard boat engines and equipment.

Duties involve the diagnosis of problems, repair and servicing engines and engine components, cooling and petrol fuel systems and clutch assemblies. It will also involve repair and service of inboard and outboard marine transmissions, propeller drive and jet drive propulsion systems and trailers, installation and repair of marine electrical, electronic and ignition systems and inboard marine hull equipment/instruments. Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol into this program students need to have completed a Training Contract with an employer and be signed up as an apprentice.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast recommends the following:

  • You will have successfully completed Year 10 in a Queensland secondary school or equivalent.
  • If under 16 years of age you will need to fill out an Application for Dispensation form prior to enrolment.
  • Admission may be on the basis of maturity and other relevant work experience.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland Gold Coast's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.

This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Delivery is held over 4 years (TAFE training completed after 3 years) at Coomera Marine using a combination of workplace training and TAFE attendance. Classes are held face-to-face or on the job.

Disclaimer

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. For more information on the number of units funded for this course visit Queensland Training Information Services.

Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee, at the time of induction.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. The student and employer contribution fee will be outlined in the training place and agreed to, prior to the commencement of training.
