Diploma graduates articulate into the second year of the Bachelor of Contemporary Music Practice program. This innovative, new degree takes you beyond "the gig" to produce entire shows for launches and special events. You will learn how to incorporate technology into your performances with the use of Ableton Live software. You will learn the art and craft of screen composition, including adaptive sound and music for games, plus professional orchestration using digital sample libraries and scoring. Additionally, you will be learning to analyse and write songs based on some of the greatest songs of all time and then producing them using Logic Pro and Pro Tools. Along the way you will be learning to record, mix and master your music to a professional standard and promote yourself to a global audience using the latest trends in social media.  Music theory, ear training and contemporary music history is embedded into all units and all assessments are based around real-world practical projects. There is even room for you to use your band as an independent project, so your real-life musical life is credited towards your degree.  This is a ground-breaking, modern degree for passionate, driven individuals serious about making a living in music and production. Entry requirements

Diploma
The following entry requirements are historically indicative of a successful application thus demonstrating the applicant's ability to cope with the program workload:

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Mature aged students who are unable to provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate must submit a detailed work history or resume prior to enrolment.
  • Students under 18 years of age by application.

Basic computer skills should include:

  • A reasonable working knowledge of the PC Windows and/or MAC OS environment
  • File management
    • Ability to logically organise files in directories
    • File creation, saving and version control
    • Utilisation of internal and external storage devices
  • Internet skills including searching, emailing, opening and saving of attachments
  • Basic word processing
  • Application help menu utilisation

VET Student Loan (VSL) - All applicants enrolling into this Diploma using the VET Student Loan option must provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 4 qualification or above issued in Australia.  Applicants that are not able to produce a copy of this document are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test before enrolment.

Students are required to purchase the following resources (teachers will provide details including suitable models and suppliers for each listed item during relevant class times):

  • 1 x 1TB external hard drive to store/backup all class project files and learning resources
  • Personal stationery
  • Various industry memberships will be recommended

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast will provide access to:

  • Photocopier (pay per use)
  • Computer Labs - high-end Apple Mac and Windows
  • Learning environment - classrooms, editing suites, drawing rooms, studio space, tables, chairs, whiteboards, overhead projectors
  • Library reference material.
  • Textbooks and above listed resources are not included in the program fees

Coomera Campus boasts industry standard production facilities including four Non-Linear Editing (NLE) suites, seven sound recording studios, a purpose built auditorium, a large multi-purpose black box theatre studio (sound stage), state-of-the-art live sound reinforcement and lighting systems, full complement of backline musical instruments including acoustic/electronic drum kits, pianos/keyboards and a variety of guitar/bass amplifiers.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Bachelor

Timetable

Diploma
Full-time classes are held on Monday and Tuesday 8.00am-5.15pm over 12 months (2 semesters) at Coomera, A Block, Level 1, Room A.01.053 (Main Auditorium). Timetable subject to change

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast provides world class facilities to deliver this training including:

  • Pro Tools based recording complex with seven studios
  • Dedicated music delivery classroom equipped with digital audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, specialist software and plugin packages on high-end computers for each student
  • Modern full scale theatre space with the latest digital audio and lighting technology
  • Extensive collection of industry standard equipment including microphones, amplifiers, instruments, sound reinforcement systems and lighting technology
  • Experienced, qualified, passionate teachers with current links to industry.

Students complete the Diploma with a portfolio of recordings they have recorded, edited, mixed and produced as well as significant hands-on experience working on live productions in a variety of roles.

A combination of face-to-face and tutorial sessions is offered at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast as delivery techniques for theory and practical sessions involving small groups and individual activities. Where possible, sessions are conducted within a simulated workplace environment.

The notional duration of the course in hours is:

  • Supervised: 640 hours in the classroom (applied learning – demonstration and application, activities, collaborative projects, group discussion)
  • Non-supervised: 600 hours (content exploration and meaning – lecture screencast and videos, YouTube videos, Wikipedia articles and websites, personal or work experience, networking, field work)
  • Volume of learning: 1240 hours

Bachelor

  • Full-time classes are held over 2 years at Coomera.
  • On average 8 hours on-campus contact per week.
  • Two hour lecture combined with 2 hour on campus tutorial, per unit.

The Annual Indicative cost is the fee that applies to a standard full-time enrolment, which is 24 credit points.

This is a Commonwealth Supported Place and you may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan

STUDY NOW, PAY LATER
HECS-HELP is an interest-free loan from the Australian Government that helps you pay for higher education qualifications, such as associate degrees or bachelor degrees.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast receives the full loan amount for your course directly from the Government, and you repay your loan through the Australian taxation system once your income reaches a certain threshold.

You are eligible for HECS-HELP if you:

  • are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa
  • are enrolled in an associate degree or above on, or before the census date
  • have not exceeded the HECS-HELP limit
  • have an Australian Tax File Number (TFN) or Certificate of Application for a TFN.

COMMONWEALTH SUPPORTED PLACE
The Australian Government subsidises some students' university fees, which makes the cost for those students much lower.  If you receive the subsidised fee rate you are known as a Commonwealth Supported Student (CSS), or as holding a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).

SCHOLARSHIPS
The University of Canberra offer a wide range of undergraduate scholarships to suit different needs, situations and study interests. They have scholarships available in Semester One and Semester Two of each year. Scholarships can be applied for by both new and continuing students up until census date of each semester.
