Gain trade qualifications in heavy commercial vehicle mechanics
To study for this Certificate III you will need to be an existing contracted apprentice in the field of heavy commercial vehicle technology. This course will qualify you to overhaul, service and repair the mechanical parts of road transport vehicles such as the engine, transmission (clutch, gear box and differential) and the suspension systems (springs, steering, brakes, wheels and tyres). Training is delivered in workshops, in the classroom and at your place of work.
Students will perform tasks including discussing problems with vehicle drivers to discover faults and carry out their own diagnostic procedures. They will repair and service cooling systems, diesel fuel systems, air conditioning, engine forced induction systems and clutch assemblies. In addition, they will overhaul, repair and service engines, manual and automatic transmissions, air braking systems and final drive assemblies, and repair and service steering and suspension systems. The repair of ignition, electronic engine management, electrical systems and safety/roadworthy inspections are also encompassed in the heavy vehicle mechanic's duties.
It is highly recommended that people wanting to get into the industry choose to undertake a prevocational or traineeship in Certificate II in Automotive. A ‘prevocational’ course gives the student an idea of what it is like to work in the industry, providing some solid foundation skills to enter the workplace. By accepting a prevocational student, employers are given the chance to view the student’s skills and attitude before they commit to employing them as an apprentice.
You may be able to obtain recognition for your work or life experiences under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Speak to your teacher in the first session to start this process. Course details

Winning the gold medal at the National Worldskills Competition last year was a huge honour for me. I am extremely grateful for my TAFE Gold Coast teachers who will continue to mentor me leading into the International Worldskills Competition to be held in Brazil later this year. The positive experience I have had completing my course, is a life long experience that I have shared and would recommend to anyone considering securing a role within the automotive trades industry.
