Start your career in the justice system

The Certificate IV in Crime and Justice Studies is designed by justice professionals for people who would like to achieve employment in the criminal justice system and wish to develop a deeper understanding of the justice system.

This course aims to provide you with a broad understanding of the justice system and develop the personal skills and knowledge which underpin employment in the justice system.

Learn to identify and apply the legal framework, communicate with clients on justice-related issues, prepare court documentation, analyse social justice issues, gather information through interviews, and analyse and present research information. Gain the skills to seek pre-selection into the Queensland Police Service or work in a range of justice-related occupations.

The course provides learners with the specialist skills and knowledge required to perform the following duties and functions:

  • Interpret and apply Acts, Rules and Regulations to provide para-professional support and advice on justice related issues.
  • Prepare accurate legal and justice related documentation and communication using methods and protocols appropriate to the justice sector and the context.
  • Interpret and apply legislation to provide support and advice on justice related issues.
  • Conduct research and undertake complex investigations.
  • Gather and preserve evidence.
  • Work effectively in the crime and justice sector and within the legal and regulatory frameworks.
  • Prepare accurate documentation and communication using methods and protocols appropriate to the justice sector and the context.
  • Identify and apply the principles of law enforcement and the principles of natural justice.
  • Identify and explain social justice issues and the impact of these on crime and justice related matters.
  • Conduct research from primary and secondary sources to gather the evidence and information necessary to complete justice related tasks.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification however TAFE Queensland Gold Coast recommends the following beneficial entry criteria:

One of the following:

  • successful completion of Certificate III qualification; or,
  • completion of Year 10 or equivalent with a sound achievement in English; or,
  • relevant work or life experience in the business or justice fields.
  • To access Higher Level Skills funding for this course the prospective student must meet all subsidy eligibility.
  • Further funding incentives apply to this course.  Please speak with a Customer Service Consultant on (07) 5581 8300 to check your eligibility.

Resources required

  • Students must have access to a computer or internet at home/work or you may use those available at any of our campuses during their normal hours of operation.
  • Students are required to bring their own tablet, laptop or iPad to class.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast will provide access to:

  • Photocopier (pay per use)
  • Computer Labs - high-end Apple Mac and Windows
  • Learning environment - class rooms, tables, chairs, white boards, overhead projectors
  • Library reference material.

Timetable

  • Classes are held on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8.00am-5.15pm for 6 months at Southport, Level 4, Room 404.
  • Students are expected to complete at least 15 additional hours of self-directed study outside of class times.
  • All practical activities and assessments will be conducted in a simulated work environment.

Course commencement is subject to minimum enrolment numbers.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

The Higher Level Skills Subsidy is a one-off subsidy that offsets the cost of an eligible Certificate IV or higher courses.

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • Other restrictions or eligibility criteria may apply

Concession

You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability.

The Certificate IV in Crime and Justice Studies has a number of units in common with the Diploma of Crime and Justice Studies and meets the entry requirements for entry to the Diploma. This qualification also has two units in common with the Diploma of Legal Services.

The Certificate IV in Crime and Justice Studies also includes units from the Business Services Training Package and the Public Sector Training Package.  Completion of those units provides pathways into Business Services Training Package or Public Sector Training Package qualifications, including (but not limited to):
