Want a career working with animals?

Begin your career working with animals with this entry-level qualification. This course will give you the foundation skills needed to care for animals in a variety of different settings. It's the perfect starting point for a number of streams of animal care including grooming, working in animal shelters or kennels, and veterinary nursing.

This course will give you the practical skills and knowledge to complete animal hygiene routines, monitor animal health and wellbeing, and assist with surgery preparations. Our passionate team of industry professionals are the best in the business and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to succeed in your studies.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as an assistant dog groomer, kennel or animal shelter attendant, or a trainee vet nurse. It will also give you the knowledge required to complete further studies in the field. Course details

  • Students must be in Year 10 or 11.

Resources required

  • Students need to wear black protective waterproof work shoes and long, black, work pants/trousers for practical days and placement.
  • Students are required to purchase a black with blue trim polo shirt (with TAFE logo and the words animal science on it) directly from our supplier Gold Coast Uniforms, 55 Nerang Street, Southport ph: 5591 5199Hours: Monday-Thursday 9.00am-6.00pm and Friday 9.00am-5.00pm. Cost $35.00 (Prices are correct at time of printing and are subject to change).
  • It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.


  • Classes are held on Fridays from 8.00am-3.00pm for 19 months at Southport, Level 1 (Ground Floor), Room 103.
  •  Students will be required to attend practical and work experience days from 9.00am-3.00pm on Fridays. This will consist of ten days across the following facilities: Loganlea TAFE, Animal Welfare League at Coombabah, and an animal care facility scheduled during term time.
  • Students are responsible for organising their own transport.
  • Additional online self-study is required.
  • The online component is delivered via our Learning Management System Connect, and we ensure you will be supported every step of the way.


Students are required to complete the compulsory work experience.


To attain this qualification students must achieve competency in 12 units, 7 core and 5 electives.
