Get a head start on your career in horticulture with this entry-level position. This trade level qualification will see you gain horticulture skills in plant identification and plant care, landscape management, propagating, pruning and fertilising to maintain gardens and nurseries. The industry is experiencing strong growth with more than 50,000 job openings expected in nurseries and gardens across Australia in the next five years.

This course will also give you a broad range of knowledge in improving soil conditions, implementing plant nutrition programs, operating machinery equipment, and maintaining nursery plants. Our highly-experienced staff are still strongly embedded in the industry and will give you the one-on-one guidance you need to succeed.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you for employment as a horticulturist, and/or to work in a nursery, or parks and gardens. Course details

Entry requirements

  • Direct entry with Year 10 or equivalent.
  • If you're under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.
  • Students may be able to enrol after the commencement of the course but will need to speak with the teacher Kim Hodgkisson on 5581 8435 or email kim.hodgkisson@tafe.qld.edu.au prior to enrolling.
  • To access Certificate 3 Guarantee funding for this course the prospective student must meet all the subsidy eligibility.
  • To access Fee Free Year 12 funding for this course the prospective student must provide evidence that they have graduated Year 12 in the last 12 months. Therefore, if you would like to enrol in the course using this funding, you will need to provide a copy of your Year 12 certificate and meet all other Certificate 3 Guarantee subsidy eligibility.

Resources required

Students will be required to bring:

  • Steel capped boots
  • Sun safe clothing (including a hat) - sunscreen is provided
  • Pen and notebook

Students are provided with:

  • Rigger gloves
  • Chemical gloves
  • Protective eyewear
  • Disposable masks

Timetable

  • Classes are held on Monday and Tuesday from 8.00am-4.00pm for 20 weeks at Ashmore. For the first two weeks classes will also be held on Wednesday.
  • On the first day of class students should meet at Customer Service, E Block.
  • There is an expectation that the student will undertake an extra 22 hours per week (approximately) of self-directed or online study in addition to their in-class time.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • and don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

The Queensland government has identified a number of industries with a high demand for trained workers.
