Do you want to work in Pathology?

This qualification enables workers to participate in all activities relating to pathology including blood collection. Graduates of the Certificate III in Pathology Collection qualification require a range of skills including communication, customer service, technical skills, and the ability to use discretion and judgement to adapt and transfer their skills to different scenarios.

To achieve this qualification the candidate must have successfully completed a minimum of 35 hours of work experience. Course details

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements outlined in the Training Package however TAFE Queensland Gold Coast require the following entry requirements:

  • Sound literacy, numeracy and computer skills equivalent to Year 10.
  • Participate in the required hours of vocational placement/work experience.
  • Students must be physically, emotionally and mentally "fit for practice" for the purpose of vocational placement/work experience.
  • Applicants should also possess computer skills including being able to operate a personal computer and printer, create and manage basic files, navigate a learning management system, perform basic tasks such as word processing, sending and receiving emails with attachments, uploading and downloading documents and using web based search engines.
  • To access Certificate 3 Guarantee funding for this course the prospective student must meet all the subsidy eligibility.
  • Further funding incentives also apply to this course.  Please speak with a Customer Service Consultant on (07) 5581 8300 to check your eligibility.

Please note:  Students are required to handle equipment (i.e. needles and syringes) for blood collection. Students are also required to perform a minimum of eight live sticks (taking blood from each other under teacher direction) prior to vocational placement/work experience.

Resources required

  • All learning content will be provided to the student.
  • Students are required to wear enclosed leather shoes, long corporate slacks and a plain black polo shirt for vocational placement and clinical lab work. Any costs associated with these requirements are borne by the student.
  • Students are responsible for any costs associated with travel to and from vocational placement/work experience.

Timetable

  • Content is delivered online over 7 months with weekly workshops on Monday from 12.30pm-4.45pm at Southport.
  • Students will be required to attend practical days at Southport.

Placement

  • The student completes the online assessment components, attends the workshops and completes the documented 35 hours of blood collection.  The student must be able to complete 35 documented hours of pathology collection work under the supervision of a person currently working in a Phlebotomist role for at least 18 hours per fortnight. This may be able to be completed in your current workplace or will be organised by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast on your behalf.
  • For students currently working in the industry please enquire with your teacher regarding flexible options for vocational placement/work experience.
  • All students are strongly encouraged to obtain Hepatitis B vaccinations.

Important Information

Students are required to wear appropriate industry standard clothing for placement and clinical lab work. This would be enclosed leather shoes, long corporate slacks and a plain black polo shirt. The student is responsible for ensuring that they have the appropriate clothing.

Course commencement is subject to minimum enrolment numbers.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • and don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.
