Certificate III in Fitness
Establish yourself in fitness with this entry-level qualification. You'll be equipped with a broad range of knowledge needed to work as a fitness or exercise instructor.

Our teaching team have many years of industry experience and knowledge that will help you achieve your goals within the fitness industry. You'll have access to professional operating gyms with up-to-date equipment that will give you the edge and experience that employers seek.

You will learn the basic knowledge needed to succeed in areas like fitness program instruction, provision of healthy eating information, and introduction of exercise for older clients. You may also have a chance to specialise in areas like aqua or group exercise instructor.

Successfully completing this program will allow you to seek employment as a qualified exercise instructor. You will be able to take your skills and work anywhere in Australia, or move into further study to expand your options.

Certificate IV in Fitness
Take the next step in fitness with this mid-level qualification. You'll gain the specialised skills and knowledge needed to start your career in personal training. Demand for qualified personal trainers is set to expand by as much as 25,000 new positions within the next five years. With this level of growth, demand for skilled fitness practitioners will be high.

In addition to learning specialised skills and knowledge to instruct personal training programs, group personal training, and exercise for older clients, you may also learn the fundamentals of operating your own small personal training business.

Successfully completing this qualification will give you the ability to set yourself apart in the fitness industry. You'll be equipped to seek employment as a personal trainer, exercise instructor or expand into your own personal training business.

Diploma of Sport Development
Advance your career in the sports and fitness industry with this higher-level qualification. Coaches and instructors are in high demand in Australia with up to 50,000 job openings expected in the next five years. This course will give you the skills to become a qualified sports development manager or coach.

You will have the opportunity to study different specialisations: sports coaching, fitness, and outdoor recreation. Depending on your specialisation you may learn how to plan and deliver coaching programs, assist athletes to prevent injury or illness, plan and conduct strength and conditioning sessions, lead and manage people, and roster officials. You will also cover topics including management principles, sports psychology, sports nutrition, or group training. Our highly experienced team of industry experts will give you the one-on-one guidance and mentoring to succeed in the sports industry.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as a coach or sports development manager across a diverse range of settings. Course details

Entry requirements

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast has no specific entry requirements however please note the following:

Certificate III

  • To access Certificate 3 Guarantee funding for this course the prospective student must meet all the subsidy eligibility.
  • Further funding incentives apply to this course.  Please speak with a Customer Service consultant on (07) 5581 8300 to check your eligibility.
  • Students must be prepared to undertake 30 hours of vocational placement.

Certificate IV

  • Individuals must hold a Certificate III in Fitness and a current First Aid and CPR certificate.  Please bring a copy of these qualifications at enrolment.
  • Students must be prepared to undertake 40 hours of vocational placement.

Diploma

  •  It is highly recommended that students have completed Year 12, or its equivalent, or be of mature age. 
  • Students enrolling into the Diploma of Sport Development must provide a copy of their Certificate III in Fitness and Certificate IV in Fitness transcripts upon enrolment.
  • Students must be prepared to undertake 80 hours of vocational placement.

VET Student Loan (VSL) - All applicants enrolling into the Diploma using the VET Student Loan option must provide a copy of their Year 12 certificate or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 4 qualification or above issued in Australia.  Applicants that are not able to produce a copy of this document are required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test before enrolment.

Resources required

  • Appropriate dress is required for fitness sessions including enclosed shoes, water, towel and basic stationery supplies.
  • Students will need to have access to transport to enable them to attend vocational placement and practical components of the course. Students may need to travel as far as Hope Island and Coolangatta to attend gym and recreation sessions at their own expense.
  • The following textbook is a highly recommended for Certificate III students - 'The Essential Guide to Fitness: For the Fitness Instructor', (3rd edition) by Rosemary Marchese published by Cengage Learning ISBN: 978-01703546251.  Students can source this book either online or via a bookshop.
  • The following textbook is highly recommended for Certificate IV students: 'Fitness Trainer Essentials: For the Personal Trainer' (3rd edition) by Attridge T; and Felice, M; published by Cengage Learning ISBN: 9780170356176. Students can purchase this externally online or source it via a bookshop.

Timetable

Classes are held face-to-face on Monday 8.00am-3.00pm, Tuesday 8.00am-4.00pm and Wednesday 8.00am-10.00am at Southport and at fitness and recreation venues throughout the Gold Coast. Timetable subject to change.

  • The Certificate III is delivered over 9 weeks.
  • The Certificate IV is delivered over 20 weeks.
  • The Diploma of Sport Development is delivered over 12 months.
  • The First Aid class for Certificate III students is essential to your qualification attainment and will be held from 8.00am-5.00pm on Friday 23 February 2018 at Southport.
  • Students will be required to engage in an additional 10 hours of off-campus study. This will ensure adequate time for the required research to be completed for relevant assessment tasks.

Placement

Certificate III students will complete 30  hours of vocational placement within the scheduled delivery.
Certificate IV students will complete 40 hours of vocational placement within the scheduled delivery.
 Diploma students will complete 80 hours of vocational placement within the scheduled delivery.

To achieve the Certificate III in Fitness a total of 16 units must be completed, 9 core and 7 electives.
To achieve the Certificate IV in Fitness a total of 20 units must be completed, 12 core and 8 electives.
To achieve the Diploma of Sport Development a total of 20 units must be completed, 11 core and 9 electives.

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • and don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

Outcome

Certificate III

  • You will be able to register under the Fitness Australia National Registration Scheme as a National Fitness Instructor with a specialisation as a Gym Instructor.
  •  You may be able to obtain work as a Fitness Instructor or Group Exercise Instructor.
  • The national recognition of approved training enables workers in the fitness industry to know the training they have received is recognised in other states and territories, and across other industry sectors.
  • Once registered the Fitness Instructor must attend training and workshops to maintain registration.

Certificate IV

  • Successful completion of Certificate IV in Fitness is a requirement for registration as a Fitness Trainer with the registration body - Fitness Australia.
  • You will receive international accreditation recognition in the United Kingdom and New Zealand amongst other places.
  • Career prospects include: Fitness Instructor, National Fitness Trainer, Fitness Trainer for older adults and children.

Diploma
