Did TAFE Queensland Gold Coast used to be GCIT?

Yes - TAFE Queensland Gold Coast is the new name as a part of a state wide move uniting Queensland's 12 TAFE institutes into six regions.

While the name and logo has changed, future and current students can still expect the same high quality education and training from TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.

Where are the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast locations?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast has five locations that provide a wide variety of courses, programs and on-site facilities. They are located at Southport, Coolangatta, Ashmore and two in Coomera.

How do I find the buildings?

Current students can access interactive campus maps of all TAFE Queensland Gold Coast locations on the student intranet. Visitors can see our location details on out about us area.

Is TAFE Queensland Gold Coast open for public holidays?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast is closed for all recognised Queensland and national public holidays which are listed on the Australian public holiday's page, along with the Gold Coast Show Holiday.

Current students can also log into the student intranet for more information.

When do TAFE Queensland Gold Coast semesters start and finish?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast semester times can vary depending on the course being studied.

However, students can access their individual timetables on the student intranet to view the specific semester dates and holiday periods for their course.

When are the TAFE Queensland Gold Coast holidays?

There are four holiday periods during the year in April, June/July, September and December/January however dates can vary.

How much does parking cost at my TAFE Queensland Gold Coast campus?

Free on-site parking is available at the Ashmore, Coolangatta and Coomera Campuses. The Southport Campus also provides undercover, on-site parking at a small charge.

Which TAFE Queensland Gold Coast locations have libraries, and what are the opening hours?

Our Ashmore, Coomera fand Southport locations have libraries which are accessible to all students and teachers.

Can TAFE Queensland Gold Coast help me get to university?

The Job Guide is a popular publication which assists individuals in exploring all their career options. It provides comprehensive information on a range of job descriptions including personal requirements, education and training, employment opportunities and other related jobs.

I have a disability. What services are available to me as a student at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

We provide support for all types of disabilities, and are more than happy to accommodate our future and current students. It is important for us to make your needs known to assist us in planning for your learning support. Please advise us upon enrolling of your physical or mental disability.

The Disability Support Officer is located at the Student Services Centre, and available prior to your enrolment to meet and discuss your support needs.

We can assist you in diagnosing specific requirements, locating and organising equipment and liaising with teachers on your behalf.

I am a mature age, and I am currently working, will I have enough time to study with TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast provides a number of course where you have the option to study online, face-to-face, learn at work, be computer assisted or study independently. We have many students who work from home and complete their course using the internet to download study information, chat with other students in the course, view assessment information and submit your assignments.

There are many mature age students who study at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast, and find our flexible options really assist them in balancing their life/study/work balance.

What Student Support services are available at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast students have access to a range of student support services that will assist in overcoming barriers in your learning, help you achieve successful outcomes and make your study at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast an enjoyable one.

What public transport is available at my location?

All TAFE Queensland Gold Coast locations are easily accessible by public transport from all areas of the Gold Coast.
There are bus routes are available to all TAFE Queensland Gold Coast campuses, with additional transport options for the Southport campus which is located on the Gold Coast Light Rail route.  Coomera fcan be accessed via train from the Coomera Station. Coomera Marine can be accessed via train then bus from Coomera Station.

Please not students need both a Student ID and Tertiary Transport Concession card to acess stundent concession on public transport.

Is my location open on weekends?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast campuses are open from Monday-Friday, but are not open on Weekends to students or the general public, unless otherwise stated for a short course or TAFE Queensland Gold Coast event.

Can I study Year 12 at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

Yes - TAFE Queensland Gold Coast offers the Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation which is designed for those adults who have not had the opportunity to qualify for tertiary entrance through traditional pathways of secondary schooling.

This option is also ideal for those wanting to replace their current Year 12 result for entrance into a tertiary program.

I want to know more about vocational placement and apprenticeships, who should I contact?

Any questions regarding vocational placement or apprenticeships at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast can be directed at the relevant division on campus, or call 07 5581 8 866.

Our Customer Service Centres are open Monday to Friday 8:30am-5pm, and Wednesday 9am-5pm.

Can I study online with TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

Yes - TAFE Queensland Gold Coast offers a variety of online courses, from short courses to diplomas.

It is a great way to balance study with other commitments such as work or family as it can be done when and where it suits you.

What is the difference between blended and online modes?

Online learning is a great option for students who want a self-paced, flexible program delivered in an innovative and interactive web-based learning environment. Facilitators of the course are available via email, online forum, or online chat rooms to support students throughout the duration of their program. All that is required is a computer and internet access, with an email account!

Blended programs incorporate face-to-face classes on campus with online content, and self-paced study at home. Some courses will also include vocational placement or practical tutorials (depending on what course you choose). Blended learning is ideal for those who prefer the best of both worlds of being online and on campus, with courses offering a choice of which classes to attend face-to-face and which units to complete online.

Does TAFE Queensland Gold Coast provide online services?

Absolutely! Once enrolled, students will have access to following services:

  • The student intranet, a portal to all online service which provides timetables, event calendars, campus maps, policies and other resources.
  • Student Self Services (SSS) is the first step in receiving a password to gain access to other online services. It helps in managing personal information, as well as viewing and printing your academic information and financial details.
  • Library Information Management System (LIMS) which enables students to access learning and information resources from the library.
  • Student also have access to the online learning system for classes online

Fees, Payments and Enrolment

How do I pay for my course, and do I have to pay upfront?

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast has several payment options in place, however all courses must be paid for on enrolment. Options available to future students include fees by instalment, VET FEE-HELP for Advanced Diploma, Diplomas and some Certificate IV programs have government or industry co-contribution or subsides and partial fee exemptions for concessions.

Am I able to get government assistance while I study with TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

Of course, circumstances vary from student to student. TAFE Queensland Gold Coast recommends students to contact www.centrelink.gov.au (Australian Government website) to discuss their personal circumstances in regards to whether they are eligible for government assistance. Please visit Centrelink or call 13 24 90.

I want to apply for a Student Payment Plan before I enrol, what information do I need to supply to TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

In order to apply, you will be required to supply proof of income, for example a recent payslip or Centrelink payment advance dated within the last two months would be best.

Guarantor information will also be required if joint fortnightly expenses are supported by dual incomes, for example if your partner pays for some or most expenses, he/she must complete the Guarantor information and supply proof of income etc.

What is the Student Payment Plan, and what does it cover?

If eligible, you have the option of utilising a Direct Debit agreement with TAFE Queensland Gold Coast to have payments debited from your nominated account to assist you in paying your course fees. Unfortunately, the Student Payment Plans do not cover:

  • Materials
  • Equipment
  • Text books
  • Accommodation
  • Travel or general living expenses
  • Any additional costs identified as incidental fees

What documents do I need to enrol at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast?

Enrolling couldn't be easier! You will need 100 Points of Identification which may include one or more of the following:

  • Passport
  • Birth Certificate
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • License issued under Australian law

Secondary identifications can also be used if none of the above are available to you. Additional documentation may be required to prove citizenship, permanent residency or other visa status.

I want to do a short course, am I eligible for VET FEE-HELP?

Unfortunately, VET FEE-HELP is only eligible for Advance Diploma, Diploma and some Certificate IV courses at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast does provide a wide range of flexible payment options, fees by instalment and partial fee exemptions for concessions, available on a wide range of courses such as the short courses we offer.

Can I get VET FEE-HELP with Cert II or Cert III courses?

VET FEE-HELP is only eligible for Advance Diploma, Diploma and some Certificate IV courses at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast provides a wide range of flexible payment options, fees by instalment and partial fee exemptions for concessions, available on a wide range of courses such as Cert II and Cert II, however unfortunately VET FEE-HELP is not available for these types of courses.

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

I already have a qualification; can I apply for a Credit Transfer?

Yes you can - If you have undertaken a relevant course, you may be able to apply for a credit transfer to have the direct recognition of a Unit of Competency from a previous qualification.

If you are applying for a credit transfer you must provide a certified copy of your official transcript(s) showing the unit(s) you are applying for and any other required evidence within 14 days of your start of study date.

If your application is received after this date, you can still be liable for the cost of the unit. Also, please note that in peak times there is a two week assessment and process period from the time your completed application is received. There is also no cost associated with credit transfers.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and does TAFE Queensland Gold Coast offer it?

Yes - TAFE Queensland Gold Coast offers RPL and has developed a streamlined process to take suitable candidates through RPL quickly and easily, what's great about it is it's all online!

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast offers RPL qualifications across most learn areas including tourism, hospitality, trades, education, creative industries, commerce and health. Currently we are offering online RPL assessment in these key areas: Business, Child Care, Health and Hospitality

What is the difference between a Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning?

A Credit Transfer is the process by which a student can have credit towards a course(s) they are undertaking or intend to undertake, from a previous qualification obtained.

A RPL is the recognition of knowledge and skills from life or work experience, or any type of training the student may have previously undertaken.

English Language Information

Is IELTS offered at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast campuses?

Yes - International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is regularly held at the Southport Campus, and will allow International students to move on to further study or get a job.

IELTS assesses the language ability of candidates who need to study and work where English is the main language of communication. The International English Language Testing System is accepted by employers and universities in a variety of countries, including:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America

Does TAFE Queensland Gold Coast have a language school?

English Language Intensive Courses (ELICOS) are programs designed for those who want to learn English either for personal improvement, and/or further study.
